Ford sold a total of 28,492 units of the standard 3-window coupe and 27,956 Deluxe 3-window coupes.
  • Returning from WWII and getting back to work with some money in their pockets, Americans discovered a new pastime...hot rodding. The 1930s-era Ford was ripe for the picking. By the late 1940s, the Model Bs and Model 18s were well over a decade old, making them cheap to buy with parts readily available. Hot rodders bought them up in droves wrenching in their garages turning these once-tame suburban coaches into fire-breathing monsters! The hot rodding trend continued strong well into the 1960s. Even today, the 1934 Ford 3-window coupe remains one of the most sought-after hot rodding platforms.

In 1953 the Ford Courier "Emergency Service Division" was added to the fleet. The last cars to carry the traditional NYPD light boxes were an order of Ford Mainline sedans, with the 223-cu.in., 120-hp straight-six, that were delivered in 1955. The following year, the department took delivery of new 1956 Chevrolet 150 two-door sedans, with the base 235.5-cu.in., 140-hp Stovebolt six for power. These were the first NYPD cars fitted with a rotary roof beacon, the Federal Beacon Ray, with a red dome.

  • The Fifties were famous for automobiles with outrageous styling. With Thunderbird-inspired styling and just the right amount of brightwork embellishing the bumpers, grill, and accents ending in subtle tail fins, Ken Nagel’s 1956 Ford Fairland Sunliner oozes charm. Bathed in two-tone Sunset Coral and Raven Black paint, this is not just a run-of-the-mill red or black show car. Many car enthusiasts fall in love with its eye-catching color and quality of workmanship. It's no wonder this car won the Gold Award at the 2012 Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. Performance comes by way of the “Y” block 292 cubic-inch ‘Thunderbird’ V8 engine with a Holley 4 bbl carburetor rated at 200 horsepower, mated to a column-mounted 3-speed stick with overdrive transmission. Dual exhaust adds to the driving excitement! The Kelsey Hays-inspired wire wheels with whitewall tires finish off the fabulous look. In 2017, this beauty was also featured on the cover in the FOMOCO Times, a publication of the Crown Victoria Association.

  • In 1958, while the NYPD would never abandon foot patrols--indeed, after 9/11, officers on foot posts seem to be everywhere--there was a new emphasis on high-speed response by officers in cars, mimicking the proactive philosophy of policing that grabbed a firm hold in places like Los Angeles and Dallas. In the NYPD, patrol cars weren't primarily for roving supervisors anymore. The average cop on the beat newly found himself with a partner patrolling a "sector" within a precinct. Ford got the distinction of delivering both the final two-door patrol cars and first four-doors used by the NYPD, the 1958 Ford Custom 300.

  • Braniff Airways, Inc., doing business as Braniff International Airways, from 1948 until 1965, and then Braniff International from 1965 until 1983, was an American airline that operated from 1928 until 1982. Its routes were primarily in the midwestern and southwestern United States, Mexico, Central America, and South America. In the late 1970s, it expanded to Asia and Europe. In October 1951, Braniff flew to 29 airports in the US, from Chicago and Denver south to Brownsville, Texas, to Central America, Cuba, and South America. After months of negotiations Braniff acquired Mid-Continent Airlines a small Kansas City-based trunk line on August 16, 1952. The merger added numerous cities, including Minneapolis/St. Paul, Sioux City, and Sioux Falls in the North; Des Moines, Omaha, and St. Louis in the Midwest; and Tulsa, Shreveport, and New Orleans in the South. The acquisition of the Minneapolis/St. Paul to Kansas City route (with stops in Des Moines and Rochester, Minnesota) was of particular interest to Braniff, as Mid-Continent had been awarded this route instead of Braniff in 1939. After the merger Braniff operated 75 aircraft and over 4000 employees, including 400 pilots. In 1955 Braniff was the tenth largest US airline by passenger-miles and the ninth largest by domestic passenger-miles. Beard led Braniff into the jet age. The first jets were four Boeing 707-227s. In 1965 Braniff's fleet was about half jet, comprising 707s, 720s and British Aircraft Corporation BAC One-Eleven jetliners. The long range Boeing 707-320C intercontinental model was then introduced. However, the 707, 720 and One-Eleven would all subsequently be removed from the fleet. Braniff's last piston schedule was operated with a Convair aircraft in September 1967 and the last Lockheed L-188 Electra turboprop service was flown about May 1969.

  • Pan American World Airways, originally founded as Pan American Airways and commonly known as Pan Am, was the principal and largest international air carrier in the United States from 1927 until its collapse on December 4, 1991. It was founded in 1927 as a scheduled air mail and passenger service operating between Key West, Florida and Havana, Cuba. The airline is credited for many innovations that shaped the international airline industry, including the widespread use of jet aircraft, jumbo jets, and computerized reservation systems. It was also a founding member of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the global airline industry association. Identified by its blue globe logo ("The Blue Meatball"), the use of the word "Clipper" in its aircraft names and call signs, and the white uniform caps of its pilots, the airline was a cultural icon of the 20th century. In an era dominated by flag carriers that were wholly or majority government-owned, it was also the unofficial overseas flag carrier of the United States. During most of the jet era, Pan Am's flagship terminal was the Worldport located at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. Pan Am was the launch customer of the Boeing 707, placing an order for 20 in October 1955. It also ordered 25 of Douglas's DC-8, which could seat six across (the 707 originally was to be 144 inches (3.66 m) wide with five-abreast seating; Boeing widened it to match the DC-8). The combined order value was $269 million. Pan Am's first scheduled jet flight was from New York Idlewild to Paris Le Bourget (stopping at Ganderto refuel) on October 26, 1958, with Boeing 707–121 Clipper America (N711PA) with 111 passengers. The 320 "Intercontinental" series 707 in 1959-60, and the Douglas DC-8 in March 1960, enabled non-stop transatlantic crossings with a viable payload in both directions. Pan Am was the launch customer of the Boeing 747, placing a $525 million order for 25 in April 1966. On January 15, 1970 First Lady Pat Nixon christened a Pan Am Boeing 747 Clipper Young America at Washington Dulles in the presence of Pan Am president Najeeb Halaby. During the next few days, Pan Am flew several 747s to major airports in the United States as a public relations effort, allowing the public to tour the airplanes. Pan Am began its final preparations for the first 747 service on the evening of January 21, 1970, when Clipper Young America was scheduled to fly from New York John F. Kennedy to London Heathrow. An engine failure delayed the inaugural flight's departure by several hours, necessitating the substitution of another 747 which eventually flew to London Heathrow. Passengers cheered and drank champagne as the jet finally lifted off from the runway at John F. Kennedy Airport. Pan Am carried 11 million passengers over 20 billion miles (32 billion km) in 1970, which revolutionized air travel with the first wide-bodied airliner.
